The Duke of Savoy sends 2000 troops to capture Geneva in order to expand his empire and turn Geneva Catholic. But he failed to take into account Mère Royaume. As his troops tried to scale the town walls, Royaume threw a cauldron of boiling soup over the invading troops rallying the Genevois to defend their city. The Duke had to concede defeat, 72 people died during the fracas and 13 more hung as thieves (peace treaties prevented them from being held as Prisoners of War). Fast forward to the present day and Fête de l’Escalade has become the Republic’s largest festival culminating in a rather entertaining bonfire ritual outside St. Pierre Cathedral.   Budapest Sziget Festival   Budapest Life   Bohemian Berlin
